In many cases, drug addicts are not only grateful to have completed their addiction but will definitely feel blessed to be alive in the first place. Just ask Sir Elton John, who has profoundly announced how his experience with drug addiction could have easily ended his life. Possibly one of the greatest performers of all time, John has wowed generations of audiences with his wild costumes, incredible piano playing, and his penchant for wild colors. However, at one point in his life, the singer and pianist did not walk down the Yellow Brick Road but, as he professes, wasted an entire portion of his life due to drugs and booze. Let’s take a closer look at his discussion about his battle with addiction.

A Selfish Time of My Life

In a 2012 interview to promote his memoir Love Is the Cure: On Life, Loss, and the End of AIDS, John describes himself as a self-absorbed, egotistical drug addict during the 1980s, a time when AIDS was wiping out innocent lives on a dangerous scale. As John explains, people (including friends) were dying every time he turned around, yet he still selfishly pursued his addictive behavior. In part, he proposes that this impulsivity is just another reminder of how deadly addiction is.

At the time, John explains, he did not fear the AIDS epidemic due to his addictive behavior. Mixing booze and drugs results in a cocktail that triggers feelings of grandiosity and a “holier-than-thou” attitude. John explains that the greatest miracle was that, despite his impulsive behavior, he came out on top without contracting HIV.

More Life to Live

As revealed in the book, John describes his life as a time bomb filled with alcohol, cocaine, and other drugs he cannot recall. Nevertheless, John (now fully sober for a long time now) does not let any lingering guilt hold him back. As he explains, life has so much more to provide, and he has certainly proven that point. Perhaps he truly found his future beyond the Yellow Brick Road, after all.
