Recently, state and federal law enforcement busted and ultimately arrested owners of drug rehabilitation facilities in the South Florida area, once again shedding a negative light on the tumultuous rehab industry. Arriving on the heels of an increased focus on criminal activity in the drug rehabilitation communities of Florida and California, this crackdown has opened the floodgates for dozens of programs rooted in false promises and fake offers. For example, back in June, authorities discovered that addicts were traveling to locations in South Florida on the lead of a promising rehabilitation program but, ultimately, ended up victimized by criminal operatives. In July, lawmakers struck a treatment center’s owners with about 60 charges alone. Let’s take a closer look at these circumstances and see how this impacts addiction and recovery overall.

The Good, the Bad, and the Druggy

Of course, South Florida is filled with wonderful drug rehabilitation facilities, but, as with everything that succeeds, criminal activity is bound to follow in its wake. While thousands of people have successfully overcome addiction and become sober in this warm region of the U.S., loopholes and other problems in health insurance plans have helped criminal activity take root. State Attorney Dave Aronberg (the top prosecutor in Palm Beach County) said that these culprits do not plan to make money off sobriety. Instead, they plan to drain cash from people who have relapsed.

Fair Weather Friends (Literally)

Prior to being discharged by President Trump, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions referred to one treatment center as a “fake rehab” that lured candidates with tantalizing presents like gift cards, payment for strip clubs, and even (worst of all) more drugs. Meanwhile, Bruce Zimet (an attorney who represented one of the culprits), explained that some of the wrong people are being targeted by federal investigations.

Meanwhile, Palm Beach County’s Sober Home Task Force (South Florida) is working hard to uncover cases of fraud in the rehabilitation industry and charged owners for paying for addicts. Among the 30 arrests were the accounts of patient broking.
