We have all heard the same comment about how smart people do not do drugs or drink booze (which actually is a given fact), but did you know that alcohol in particular is actually linked to people with low IQs? Now, that might bring up a round of questions, on your part. Despite its unfortunate popularity, alcohol is notorious non-controlled drug that can wreak havoc on your body. Besides inducing addiction, abuse, and dependency, it is also infamous for putting a stint in your brain, which would be a problem given the fact that 86% of Americans drink booze. However, scientists have recently determined that, there may be a connection between people with lower intelligence and drinking. Let’s take a closer look at this unique study and find out more.

Smarties Don’t Drink Apparently

Simply put, people with higher IQs do not like drinking booze. At least, that is the perspective taken by scientific study that assessed 49,321 Swedish men (conscripted for military service between the years 1969 and 1971). As part of the study, the men took IQ tests and answered questions about their general intake of alcoholic drinks. Ultimately, the scientists discovered that men with higher IQs drank smaller portions of alcohol and were less likely to engage in binge drinking, in contrast with the men with lower IQs.

However, the research team could not effectively determine the link between IQ and alcohol intake.

A Matter of Emotion and Society

Interestingly, though, the researchers did confirm that low IQ is directly linked to individuals of a lesser social status who are suffering from poverty, two factors that exponentially drive alcohol abuse and addiction.

Even more interesting, the authors of the Swedish study did conclude that people with higher IQs tend to be much healthier than individuals with lower IQs. Recent evidence suggests that this link between healthy living and high intelligence is rooted in the simple fact that strong cognitive skills allow people to make more convenient choices in life. Ultimately, past research has confirmed a link between bad habits (like smoking, overeating, and poor physical activity) and low IQ.
