Whenever you think of the marijuana scene, one of the first states that probably comes to mind is our very own California. Nestled along the beautiful Pacific Coast, the Golden States has been the hit scene for the pro-cannabis movement as far back as the 1970s, when Dennis Peron (the Father of Marijuana) started fighting for the legalization of medical-grade cannabis for HIV/AIDS patients. Later, lawmakers officially legalized pot for these purposes, and our state officially made U.S. history. Nowadays, although county laws might sway back and forth, California is still plowing through the marijuana circuit by contributing to multiple businesses and industries, in general. Most recently, a marijuana equity program in Oakland has generated its first retail store, meaning thousands of customers will have pot for Christmas. Let’s take a closer look at this situation in our beautiful state.

Grizzly Peaks Farm

Recently, the marijuana store Blunts & Moore (run by Alphonso T. Blunt Jr. and Brittany Moore) opened the store on November 29, 2018 in the Oakland Oracle Area, drawing in a firestorm of media and the public. Both owners have referred to the opening of this store as a historic moment for the city and for the pro-cannabis community, in general. Recently, following a conviction for marijuana sales, Blunt heard about the pot equity program and eventually teamed up with Moore through a reference. Sometime later, a San Diego group specializing in investment, construction, and cultivation developed a plan to lease retail space to Blunt and Moore and provide financial and professional assistance.

Long Wait in Oakland

Two years after California officials legalized marijuana in 2016, Oakland has continued to run on empty (so to speak), when it comes to pot sales. Overall, six adult-use marijuana stores are operating in the city and serving its population of 425,000. Meanwhile, a second store (Oakland Organics) will re-open on Shattuck and Alcatraz Street at some point in January. Meanwhile, the seventh store (in the entire group) only provides marijuana to licensed patients.
