At Ultra Music Festival in 2012, Madonna made a statement that caused her wide criticism. She asked the audience, “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” This question caused a stir and she later commented that she was referring to a friend’s song and not the substance. Rick Ross lost an endorsement deal after creating a rap song that spoke about Molly. It appears that no matter how easy and fun loving many people choose to perceive the substance, the real world does not condone such behavior.

Many people have the common perspective that Molly is this euphoric easy going harmless substance. It is often thought to be harmless and acceptable to consume. The party scene, specifically the rave and electronic music culture, have heavily embraced its euphoric sensation. It removes anxiety and induces feelings of openness.

Molly (MDMA) is actually 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine. It was patented in 1914 and began to receive its heavier experimentation with psychotherapists who wanted to implore patients to open up. During the 1980’s it began to gain popularity within the night scene. Since then it has gained favor with young adults and professionals alike. Unlike other substances, Molly has a refined portrayal as the upper echelon of society enjoy the release it provides. As with most things in the U.S., image is everything. Therefore having a reputation for being a “safer” drug has created a misconception among many. The quick elevation in body temperature can result in liver, kidney, heart failure, or even death.

The truth about Molly is that it is also a harmful substance. There are numerous reports of MDMA circulating the street that has no MDMA contained within or has a list of additive cuts that are harmful for use. In 2014 Ecstasydata.org – an independent laboratory testing program of Erowid Center –  tested 250 samples they analyzed in 2014 that were sold as molly. There were 40 samples that contained MDMA with adulterants, and nearly half (124) contained no MDMA at all.

The substance serves to remind us that choosing to use is never a harmless idea. It is always wise to comprehend what you may be involving yourself in. If you feel that you struggle with wise decision making, speaking to a professional counselor or therapists can enhance the process. Whether it be you or a loved one, reach out for help.
