If we were to ask you to choose a few “alcohol capitals” of the world, which cities would instantly pop into your head? Many of you might choose New York City or Los Angeles, some of the biggest metropolitan regions in America and, inarguably, some havens for partying. On the other hand, some of you might consider Sydney or England, where alcohol tends to flow through the streets due to deeply-ingrained alcohol culture. However, what if we were to tell you that 2017’s seat of alcohol use was just a two-hour drive away from our fair city of LA? Here is why sunny San Diego is a bonafide booze capital.

Breaking Records across the Map

In comparison to other American cities, our southernmost metro giant San Diego hit the #1 spot in terms of alcohol consumption. In fact, a study conducted by the Delphi Behavioral Health Group confirmed that San Diego resident spent more money on booze than any other metropolitan city in our country as of 2017. For the record, each local blew an estimated $1,112 on alcoholic drinks, with Seattle residents trailing at a close second with $986 per person.

Americans Love Booze

Now, consider the fact that out of all Americans, 80% of total purchases constituted alcoholic drinks. Housing ranked at 33%, tailed by transportation at 15.8% and food at 12.6%. On that note, the Delphi Behavioral Health Group also reports that money spent on alcohol has boosted by a staggering 57% since 1996, meaning the average American is spending about $175 more on alcohol than they did a few decades ago.

So which Americans are blowing this much money? According to Delphi, the majority of people are about 45 to 54 years of age.
