For years and years, large numbers of pet owners have been debating on whether marijuana is a good form of medication for their furry friends. At first, you might think this is absolutely ludicrous. Why would dogs and cats benefit from using something as addictive as pot? Nevertheless, adopted parents of puppies and kittens across America are considering if their furry little ones can finally get relief for their arthritis or anxiety. So, one question remains: can animals get high from pot? The answer, ultimately is “yes,” but not in the way you imagined. Let’s take a closer look at how cats and dogs get a kick off the little green plant and some of the surprising results down the line.
Dogs and Dabbing
While dogs most certainly do not dab, they can still consume the plant and get high, but not in the same way as us humans. Unlike us, our canine counterparts do not possess a prefrontal cortex, which completely controls rational thinking, so dogs do not understand why the plant is affecting them a certain way. For example, after he or she is injured, a dog will not understand why it is feeling pain. So, in light of this, marijuana is seen more as a medication (from a rudimentary point of view) instead of a way to “get high.” Keep in mind, though, that dogs can be harmed after consuming too much THC.
Cats and Cannabis
Interestingly, our whiskered companions metabolize the THC cannabinoid just like us, but that does not mean they understand why they are getting high. Although cartoons have added a humorous touch on cats getting high on catnip, felines are in the same boat as dogs (whether they like it or not). Like canines, cats do not have a prefrontal cortex, but their experience with marijuana can be frightening in contrast. Interestingly, veterinarians and researchers have not determined the lethal limit of THC for our purring friends. For now, the link between pot and kitties remains a mystery. For now, we recommend you stick with plain old catnip.
