As science continues to progress, the international consortium of doctors, researchers, and a horde of people from the medical profession can develop new techniques for probing into the human brain and to discover what substances make us healthy and which ones can kill us. In the information age, teenagers, in particular, can be exposed to different types of discussions about drugs (not always for the better), but perhaps new research has helped these young adults find a better direction in life. After all, NIDA for Teens confirms that, as of 2017, teens are using fewer drugs than ever before. Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.

No More Cigarettes

According to data collected from 2017, teenagers in the United States consume fewer cigarettes than smokers in other countries around the world (a pretty awesome consideration):

  • Cigarette smokers have decreased by 50% over the past 50 years, greatly due to a ban restricting cigarette advertisements on television and radio in 1961.
  • Among 13-to-15-year-olds in the United States, about two out of 100 people use cigarettes. Now, compare that to 11 out of 100 teens in this same age group living in 61 neighboring countries.
  • Consider that, only 20 years ago, 18 out of 100 teenagers smoked cigarettes.

Additional Drug Use

Likewise, cocaine and opioid abuse, and subsequent addiction to these drugs, have also dropped over the past couple of years:

  • Since 2006, cocaine abuse and addiction among high schoolers has decreased by a staggering 50%.
  • Over the previous eight years, teens have been abusing fewer and fewer opioids, greatly due to strict rules governing the prescription of these drugs. Likewise, due to educational programs, many teens are becoming aware of how dangerous the legal and illegal varieties of these drugs can be.
