For many years, people thought the immune system and the brain functioned on two different levels, to an extent, but, in recent years, scientists have documented a unique connection between these two networks that could suggest otherwise. Through animal studies, medical professionals have uncovered bidirectional signals shared by the brain and the immune system that take place during the onset of mental health issues. If this study proves successful, scientists believe they can create stronger forms of therapy for patients suffering from these illnesses, specifically drug abuse and addiction. Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.

The Relationship with Inflammation

As part of a recent study, scientists from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) discovered a connection between inflammation (specifically in the immune system) and higher functions of the brain. In essence, neural networks throughout the brain work less effectively after suffering from high levels of inflammation. During the test, researchers assessed juveniles and young adults of African-American roots who had been exposed to severe stress during their lives.

The Mechanism of Emotions

As part of this study, as well as a second experiment, the NIDA team concluded that certain mechanisms could serve as triggers for inflammation. As a result, people with higher levels of inflammation have a difficult time controlling emotions and inhibitions, ultimately leading to a risk for drug abuse and addiction, as well as a long list of other risky endeavors.

This new discovery about the “neuroimmune signaling” process not only help scientists understand the relationship between physical suffering and emotional problems but may also aid addiction specialists in the treatment of patients coping with substance use disorders. As a result, the medical community as a whole could expand existing knowledge about intervention strategies.
