If we were to ask you what part of the United States promotes drinking the most, which would you choose? Some of you might think about the steel jungles of New York City and Chicago, where nightlife rules. Others might consider the daily gamble (literally) of Las Vegas, with its sprawling network of casinos and seven-day bars. However, each of you will definitely agree, no matter how you rank it, that one of the bonafide booze capitals of the U.S. is Napa County; after all, it’s called Wine Country for a reason. Let’s take a closer look at drinking problems in this area.

The Plight of Underage Drinking

In any situation, underage drinking is a horrible problem, and the situation in Napa County, California is not an exception. In a recent community meeting, Gary Lieberstein, District Attorney for Napa County, explained how drinking in front of your teenaged and young adult children is far from cool or hip while addressing a case where a mother let her 17-year old daughter share booze. In a twist of irony, Lieberstein commented that, if Napa County residents started taking charge with underage drinking, his job wouldn’t be so stressful.

A Flood of Potential Alcoholics

So how bad is the underage drinking situation in Napa County? According to Bill Dodd, of the Napa County Board of Supervisors, confirmed that 40% of 11th graders in the county had admitted to consuming alcohol in the 30 days prior to the study. Out of these young people, a staggering 42% revealed they had started drinking before they hit 15 years of age.

How did the committee respond? As many officials have pointed out, parents need to hold a tighter grip on their children’s private lives.
