Needless to say, the countries of our world vary greatly when it comes to alcohol consumption. On the high end of the spectrum, Germany and neighboring nations dominate the roster with overwhelming alcohol consumption, while the French prefer to drink in moderation (even if that quantity can be a little bit steep). However, did you know that one country that is infamous for a free lifestyle is actually one of the driest regions on the planet? Let’s take a closer look at the sober life in the Netherlands.

Living the Calmer Life

Based on a global report from the World Health Organization in 2014, the Netherlands is not a major consumer of alcohol, despite the fact that booze is exceptionally popular across Europe. In fact, as the WHO reports, Dutch people only drink a minimum of 9.9 liters of alcohol on a yearly basis, with Romania following at a close second with 10.9 liters.

However, keep in mind that the Netherlands is not the driest country on our planet. That credit goes to Italy, where residents drink 6.7 liters on average every year. In second place is Iceland, where people consume 7.1 liters yearly.

What the Dutch Drink

So which drinks are most commonly consumed in the Netherlands, given the dry factor of the country? Here is what the report confirmed:

  • Beer: 50% of all alcohol consumed in the country
  • Wine: 36%
  • Spirits: A minimal 17%

Officials have ultimately compared this consumption pattern with those in the Netherlands’ neighbors Germany and Belgium. Understand that countries that have shown a major taste for wine have slowly been consuming less and less alcohol over the past decades.

Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism
