Obviously, with every good thing that takes place in our country, we are bound to hit a couple of speed bumps as we head down the track. As the little green plant continues to gain popularity across our country, marijuana has still sparked a bit of controversy in certain aspects of the United States. Besides the obvious mixed response for health risks, certain furry members of our law enforcement community have been forced to retire as a direct result of marijuana realization. As tragic as this sounds, our specially-trained task force of police dogs is hitting a speedbump due to the simple fact that some of them are no longer required to sniff out pot. So, what does this mean for the future of our furry friends in uniform? Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.
Marijuana No Longer Necessary
In the wake of marijuana legalization, police dogs in certain areas of the United States are no longer required to sniff out cannabis (a very disconcerting notion given the fact that pot is still at the center of a black market). Now, dogs like Tulo (a golden retriever who served on the Police Department in Rifle, Colorado) are being forced to retire after dedicated services. Tommy Klein (Police Chief of Rifle) explained that dogs like Tulo cannot simply identify a drug but, instead, react to all substances in the same way (barking and pointing). Due to looser pot laws in some states, these K-9 officers are no longer required to sniff out this narcotic.
From Canada to America
Ultimately, the United States is not the only country easing its veteran police dogs out of the drug detection task force. Following the legalization of the plant in Canada, over 14 police dogs trained in narcotics detection were retired. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Police Department purchased a Belgian Malinois named Ivy, who is not trained to smell marijuana in any form. Ultimately, officers are buying puppies like Ivy to ensure the little green plant does not pose any problems to the department. Still, we have to ask one question: is this really the best choice when marijuana is still being sold on the black market?
