How much alcohol is in that drink? Ultimately, some people try to be cautious about exceeding the recommended guidelines of alcohol consumption, but, unfortunately, some people tend to extend past the recommended amount. As a result, these people will engage in binge drinking, shots, and countless rounds of beer to knock a horse flat. In the United States, the standard alcoholic beverage contains roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol (about 0.6 grams of the pure substance). However, keep in mind that popular drinks are not (at all) pure alcohol, so they will contain this 0.6-gram count (estimate). Let’s take a closer look at the common amount of alcohol in each of the most popular drinks in the United States and find out some more information.

Amount Per Single Standard Drink in U.S.

For a moment, consider that the majority of alcoholic “beverages” contain a mixture of alcohol, water, and a variety of ingredients (including flavorings), making the content between beer, wine, party drinks, and hard liquor extensively different. Let’s take a closer look at the amount of alcohol per standard serving of common drinks in the U.S.:

  • Beer/wine coolers: 5% alcohol (12 fluid ounces)
  • Malt liquor: 7% alcohol (8-9 fluid ounces)
  • Cider: 6% alcohol (10 fluid ounces)
  • Wine: 12% alcohol (5 fluid ounces)
  • Spirits/liqueur: roughly 80% alcohol (1.5 fluid ounces)

Amount Per Standard Bottle in the U.S.

Now, let’s examine the specific amount of alcohol per standard U.S. bottle of alcohol (the same contents indicated before). Keep in mind that these bottles contain more than the standard average “single” drink for each type of beverage:

  • Beer: 1 standard drink for a 12-ounce bottle and 1.5 standard drinks in a 16-ounce bottle (3.5 standard drinks in the “40s” bottles)
  • Malt liquor:5 standard drinks for a 12-ounce can/bottle and 4.5 standard drinks for a 40-ounce container
  • Wine: 5 standard drinks in a 750-milliliter wine bottle (8 standard drinks in a bottle of fortified wine like sherry)
  • Hard liquor:5 standard drinks in ½ pint of liquor (8.5 standard drinks for 1 pint)
