Sad to say, drug use during pregnancy is a bit of a problem in the United States and Canada, but, according to one report issued by our northern neighbors, the issue of pregnant moms consuming marijuana is a bit more troubling than you would think. Why is this the case, you may ask? Based on the report, 1/3 of mothers believe that consuming pot during their pregnancy is completely healthy and poses no risks to their bodies or their babies’ development. At first, you might think this is too ridiculous to be true, but the statistics speak for themselves. Many moms actually believe eating or smoking this drug will not be harmful. Why is this the case and why should we be particularly concerned (more than we already are)? Let’s take a closer look and find out.
Lack of Communication
Based on a study conducted by members of the University of British Columbia, approximately one-third of expectant mothers believe the consumption of pot is fine. Unfortunately, though, these women are completely unaware of what dangers are in store for their unborn babies. So, why are more moms consuming cannabis even though studies have proven time and time again that this drug is extremely harmful to a developing fetus? Ultimately, the UBC research team discovered that one reason is the lack of communication between doctors and their pregnant patients. Hamideh Bayrampour (assistant professor in the Department of Family Practice at UBC) explains how this lack of information has ultimately led to unwise and dangerous choices.
Marijuana Is Not a Drug?
In another strange twist, Bayrampour revealed how some people don’t believe the little green plant is a drug. In the case of pregnant mothers falling into this category, these women will not tell their doctors they are using the herb for these reasons, resulting in consumption during pregnancy. Unfortunately, though, the study revealed how most of these mothers are using the drug during the 1st trimester (the critical period of formation and development) and stop their use near the end of their pregnancies.
