Progressivism has always been a mile marker for the people of the United States. From the moment brave men first signed the Declaration of Independence (1776) to the first Moon landing, (1969), we Americans have always shown a gritty determination to get the job done. So, perhaps that is why the great marijuana debate has left such a tremendous impact on our country. Slowly but surely, we are catching up to the rest of the world, but the race continues, with more and more states joining the pro-cannabis movement. While Washington and Colorado take the cake as pro-cannabis kings, some states are refusing to move past medical marijuana prescriptions. Meanwhile, some states like Alabama are not budging quite yet. However, did you know one of these places is bordering four pro-marijuana giants? Let’s take a closer look at the cannabis laws in lovely Idaho.
Gem State
Sitting on the edge of the Pacific Northwest, Idaho is a beautiful state that once played a unique role in the formation of our country. In the mid-1800s, the U.S. and United Kingdom fought over the Oregon country, ultimately resulting in a treat signed in 1846 and the establishment of the state in 1863. The beautiful Gem State is (by far) one of the most environmentally unique regions of the U.S., containing the Snake River Plain, part of the Great Basin, and stretches of the Rocky Mountains. While thrills and urban escape might not be at the top of a travel list for Idaho, visitors will enjoy gorgeous scenery and wildlife and immerse themselves in cultural traditions of the Native American people (including the Shoshone).
Odd Man Out
Overall, Idaho could be considered the “odd man out” in the great marijuana debate. After all, it borders Washington and Colorado (two superpowers in the pro-cannabis community) and Nevada (a current hot spot for the marijuana industry). Ironically, Idaho could be considered one of the most-cannabis friendly place in the United States. Possessing a maximum of 3 ounces of marijuana can ultimately result in 1 year of jail time and/or a maximum fine of $1,000. Likewise, being high in public can still result in a $1,000 fine, as well. Despite these setbacks, however, Idaho did pass Senate Bill 1146 (2016), which allowed patients (mostly children suffering from seizures) to take a CBD-only cannabis oil as medication.
