Overall, drug reform has been a major factor in the 2018 Election, partially thanks to the little green plant called marijuana. Over the course of one day, Michigan has emerged as the 10th state to legalize recreational pot, while Missouri and Utah have allowed medical-grade cannabis. Meanwhile, Democrats have overtaken the House of Representatives and have promised lighter regulations on marijuana. Needless to say, one of the staunchest supporters of the fragrant herb could not contain his excitement this week. Right now, Congress’ top cannabis supporter, U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer, has referred to the Election as one “big night” and is excited to see how the race has progressed since 2016 (when it started). Let’s take a closer look at his opinions on an improved Congress graced by marijuana.

Marijuana Blueprints

Back in October (the month when our neighbor Canada legalized weed), U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OREGON) had introduced a blueprint for marijuana legalization that was designed to put a stop to cannabis prohibition in the country. Overall, the Representative voiced enthusiasm over the majority vote for Democrats, which promised more marijuana reform in the House.

Besides this achievement for Democrats, voters also removed US Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), head of the House Judiciary Committee, and US Rep. Pete Sessions, who has been considered Public Enemy #1 in the cannabis community. Likewise, Election 2018 also marked the removal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has also voiced opposition towards the little green plant.

Majority Views

Overall, Blumenauer believes marijuana legalization is the ideal step for the majority rule, as Americans require more freedoms to achieve happiness in this country. In the US Rep’s opinion, cannabis prohibition and existing laws are completely “outdated,” and he plans to introduce a House Bill focusing on the drug (eventually).

While Blumenauer has served as a progressive voice for the Democratic Party, he has still grappled with marijuana reform measures including the Rohrabacher–Blumenauer Amendment, which protected medical cannabis from prosecutions issued by the Justice Department.
