In 2017, millions of devoted fans across the country (and the world) mourned the loss of former-teen superstar and musician David Cassidy. At the crux of his incredible career, David was best known for his role as Keith Partridge on the hit television series The Partridge Family (1970-1974). Also, (of course) his status as a teen heartthrob. However, behind the spotlights and music, he suffered. David Cassidy struggled with isolation and (sadly) a severe addiction to drinking alcohol. After nearly forty years in the industry, the beloved star succumbed to the disease. He ultimately died of organ failure. All resulting from a severe form of alcohol poisoning. So, in time for the holidays, let’s take a look at David Cassidy and the tragic reality of alcoholism in modern media.

Cassidy’s Views on His Disease

Back in 2014, the pop icon (then-63 years old) had entered rehab after a DUI incident. He explained how one more drink could probably lead to his death. In the interview with Piers Morgan, David boldly revealed the severity and the progression of his debilitating illness. He compared the situation to a “slippery slope” that cannot be conquered. According to David, if he were to consume one more drop of alcohol, he would be broken physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. If anything else, this interview reveals the humanity of alcoholics and drug addicts to the public. Beneath the visage of angry outbursts and uncaged rage, a normal human being is waiting to be freed (but the fight is not easy).

Downfall and Demise

Ironically, David’s words that he spoke four years ago tangled in a self-fulfilling prophecy, instigated when the singer announced he was not suffering from dementia (as many fans had thought). Instead, due to drinking heavily for years, David Cassidy had contracted a deadly form of alcohol poisoning. It was slowly killing him. However, David’s death is not only an important lesson for young people but also provides older adults with the startling realities of addictive substances in an aging society. In fact, 17% of Americans in David’s age group suffer from problems directly linked to drug and alcohol use.
