After a long and tedious battle, the United Kingdom officially legalized medical cannabis treatment on November 1, 2018, but adult use for recreational purposes is still 100% illegal in the country. Overall, this event was not surprising for UK residents, following Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s actions after the drug Epidiolex sparked a national controversy back in June. As typical with many cases in which governments will not fully legalize the plant, the public has turned its attention to cannabidiol (CBD), the next best option. Although cannabis is still illegal in the United Kingdom, the country still allows the cultivation of hemp and the sale of hemp-based materials. As a result, businesses can capitalize on the growing demand for this less-psychoactive plant, and one of the first companies to do so is The Canna Kitchen (Brighton), the first restaurant to serve CBD-infused food in the UK. Let’s take a closer look and find out how this kitchen could impact the country.

First Marijuana Restaurant in the UK

Situated on the south coast of England, Brighton is a beautiful seaside resort town that is only one hour away from London. Take a trip to the town and you will find Duke Street, a busy avenue filled with shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Soon, on December 1, this beautiful walkway will also be home to The Canna Kitchen, the first marijuana-infused restaurant in the United Kingdom. Known for its vegan and vegetarian menus, this restaurant will offer a variety of foods infused with CBD (given that THC is completely against the law). Even more interesting, The Canna Kitchen will also offer items infused with rare cannabinoids like CBD (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol).

Changing Course

In a recent interview, Sam Evolution (director of The Canna Kitchen) hopes the new restaurant will kickstart a new view on the marijuana plant altogether. Inspired by the incredible history of the hemp plant, Chef Charlotte Kjaer is going to create flavorful dishes inspired by foods from different countries and reflect the healing components of CBD. Likewise, Kjaer is going to create these dishes to reflect the different flavors and fragrances of hemp strains.

Needless to say, The Canna Kitchen is following in the footsteps of other innovative groups. For example, Blooms Café is the first café to offer hemp botanicals and sell cannabis-infused coffee drinks in England’s cousin Ireland.
