When you take a nice long look at the situation with pot on the East Coast, you may begin to realize what a significant impact Massachusetts has made on the local marijuana community. Like its cousin Maine, the Bay State was one of the first East Coast states fully legalize marijuana. However, over the past two years, the Bay State has been fighting to open up doors for legal recreational pot dispensaries and has teased at the possibility of opening cafes inspired by the plant. Yesterday, after a two-year waiting period, residents of this beautiful state didn’t have to wait any longer (not legally, of course). After all, the lines stretching around New England Treatment Access (NETA) were as long as a waiting line at a rock and roll concert. Who knew the fragrant herb had this much love? Let’s take a closer look at what happened on the first day of recreational marijuana sales in Massachusetts.
Through Wind and Rain
Despite the freezing cold temperatures and snow, the operators of NETA kicked off the first day of legal recreational cannabis sales in the State of Massachusetts and declared their first hours of operations as an incredible success on November 20, 2018. From midnight to the end of the day, customers stretched around the edge of the building, while NETA employees passed out green rain ponchos to help. Meanwhile, police officers and members of the NETA staff prepared for the post-work crowd, who were unable to step to the front of the lines at (shockingly) 12:30 midnight that morning. Northampton Police Sergeant Corey Robinson had been at the store since 5:30 AM on November 20 and was happy to report that no accidents or other disruptions took place.
On the Side of the Law
In its three previous years of operation, NETA has established a strong relationship with Northampton Police, and Sergeant Robinson praised the dispensary for its adherence to state laws (during the long waiting period) and its professional atmosphere. During the long wait, NETA employees also passed out hot coffee (on the house) and complimentary menus.
