Needless to say, the great marijuana debate will go down in history as one of the most complicated legalization efforts in United States history. Spanning several decades and showing no signs of slowing down, the push to integrate the little green plant in our culture has become a fragrant green landmark of Americana thanks to the efforts of lawmakers, doctors, patients, and regular Joes. Now that 33 states have officially allowed medical cannabis use, though, more people are fighting to ensure recreational use is legal, as well. One of the most recent candidates to enter this fight is New Jersey, and, based on a recent report, lawmakers may be one step closer to making recreational pot a reality. Let’s take a closer look at the story and find out more.

Joining the Pack

On Monday, November 26, 2018, lawmakers in the State of New Jersey advanced a measure that may officially legalize the recreational use of marijuana. As part of the hearing (which took over four hours), the Democrat-led joint Assembly and Senate panel listened to the opinions of an estimated 90 people including former Democratic Representative Patrick Kennedy, as well as a long line of medical experts, ministers, and police.

Overall, the 147-page measure would:

  • Allow adults 21 and up to possess one ounce of cannabis
  • Establish a cannabis commission constituting five members
  • Set up a 12% tax on cannabis

Since this time, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has continued to voice staunch support for the little green plant. However, the process of initiating change in the Legislature has been relatively slow due to securing votes and promoting an industry.

Social Problems

Ultimately, Governor Murphy believes that social injustice and rates of arrest are the primary factors behind his support. Ultimately, opponents are worried that legalization will not provide enough support for African-American communities. In fact, the new measure will ultimately call for organizations to issue 15% of licenses to businesses operated by minorities.
