Although we have spent a lot of time discussing the dangerous of the American Opioid Crisis (and rightfully should), we sometimes tend to forget that we are not the only North American country that is suffering from a painkiller problem. To the north, our neighbor Canada is also battling an opioid epidemic on its front and has remained steadfast despite the onslaught. With multiple cases of neonatal abstinence syndrome and youth suicide stemming from these deadly painkillers. Canadian officials are still inventing new ways to get a hold on opioids. Interestingly, though, officials in Peterborough, Ontario may have added another solution to the problem. Let’s take a closer look at their early monitoring system for opioid use.
Giving an Early Warning
According to reports, the city of Peterborough has been experiencing the full brunt of the Canadian Opioid Crisis, including strings of overdose-related deaths. As a result, officials have developed an early monitoring system (one piece in a larger provincial program) that serves like a makeshift task force. Simply put, this system will track strings of opioid-related incidences in Ontario and send out an alert to warn the public about an incoming batch of potentially illegal drugs.
Using the Numbers
Dr. Rosana Salvaterra (the medical officer of health for Peterborough) explains how this system relies on collecting data (previously gathered by associates) and close monitorization. If delinquent or potentially dangerous drug-related activity is taking place in an area of the city or the province, the task force will let the public know. Even more uplifting, this system seems to be working: in November 2018, Canadian police sent out an alert regarding a tainted batch of purple-colored heroin that had been connected to previous community poisonings. In this sense, lawmakers and the community can work together to fight this crisis. Although more deaths have continued to occur since that time, Dr. Salvaterra and other officials are hopeful this monitoring system is a step in the right direction.
