The opioid epidemic has ravaged communities all across the United States, with the total costs of the crisis now surpassing one trillion dollars. While plenty of attention has been paid to the excessively high number of fatal overdoses that occur daily, recent information highlights the unique and substantial damage this crisis has imposed on women in particular.
According to a new study by the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), the number of women hospitalized for issues related to opioid use increased 75% between 2005 and 2014. The increase for men during the same time period was significantly lower at 55%. No cause for this discrepancy has been identified at this time.
In addition, another new report finds that the arrest rate for women tripled between 1980 and 2009, and the Bureau of Justice Statistics found nearly a tenfold increase in the female prison population between 1980 and 2016. Much of this rise is attributed to the opioid epidemic.
