Did you ever read about how marijuana might potentially help patients suffering from glaucoma? Did you also know that this eye problem is one of several qualifying conditions for medical cannabis across the United States? In fact, a 2006 study confirmed that a female patient (who was intolerant of other meds created for glaucoma treatment) suffering from this disorder found relief after consuming the plant. Of course, you can imagine that the scientific community exploded with excitement over the opportunities of a natural medication for this eye disorder. Unfortunately, though, we have to remember that marijuana studies are still crammed into gray space (nothing is purely black and white at this moment). So, on that note, you won’t be shocked to hear that scientists discovered CBD oil is not your best option for glaucoma treatment. Let’s take a closer look and find out more.

Cannabis and the Eyeball

Based on recent reports, the cannabis plant is now a go-to option for patients seeking alternative forms of glaucoma treatment, but the horizon has recently gotten a bit cloudier for these men and women. In a recent study published by Indiana University’s Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences (Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences), CBD might actually aggravate the condition by raising a patient’s eye pressure. According to Alex Striker (an associate scientist at Indiana University and a member of the study), this study has turned the tide by opening up possibilities to explore the negative side effects of the marijuana plant.

Men and Women across the Board

Studying a collection of mice, the researchers discovered that the rodents’ eye pressure increased by 18% for a time period of 4 hours after the administration of CBD. However, the team also discovered that these effects could be subdued if THC was put in the mix. After testing the male rodents, the researchers confirmed that THC lowered the animals’ eye pressure by 30% for a time period of 8 hours (after administration).

So, what could make this even more interesting? Ultimately, the effects of the cannabinioids were weaker in the female mice. By making note of these small details, the team might be able to complete a task that was not thought to be possible: identifying the neuroreceptors that lower eye pressure.
