When you take a closer look at the history of Prohibition in our country, you will begin to realize that this was not a very pleasant time for people. With the expansion of federal power and a string of illegal alcohol operations (yes, those were real), a strange sense of retribution and anger spread through America like wildfire, opening doors for black markets and death. Keep in mind, all of this chaos stemmed from obsession over an intoxicating drink and the simple fact it was banned. Once the Prohibition was over, alcohol was once again served in bars and sold in stores. However, did you know that some towns in our country still practice the age-old tradition of “staying dry”? Let’s take a closer look at some of these places and see how they enact teetotaling or minimal drinking.

A Matter of Town and State Power

One of the biggest and most important reasons this practice of abstinence can be enacted is the simple fact that local and state governments have the power to enforce alcohol rules without the intervention of the federal government. Even municipalities have the right to tackle this issue. In this sense, researchers have identified the following towns in these areas:

  • Wet: places where alcohol is 100% legal and sold in stores
  • Moist: places that put restrictions on alcohol purchases
  • Dry: places where alcohol is 100% illegal to purchase

State Governance Is Worth Millions

Multiple states have enacted “dry” or “moist” rules regarding the purchase of this intoxicating drink, perhaps as a failsafe to prevent the spread of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. For example, in Indiana, people cannot purchase alcohol in a liquor store or a grocery on Sundays, but these products are open and available for purchase on any other day. Meanwhile, residents of South Carolina cannot purchase or sell any alcoholic drinks on Election Day, part of a traditional concept that political leaders cannot use booze to sway the vote.

Of all the states, Tennessee has a particularly interesting policy. Although Moore County is technically a “dry” region, it is home to the Jack Daniels distillery (in Lynchburg), which could potentially raise some problems. However, Moore Country residents are not allowed to drink any Jack Daniels liquors in restaurants or consume these powerful drinks in any portion of the country.
