Following a route that starts in Southern California, various cartels have been responsible for shipping dangerously large quantities of this deadly drug across U.S. borders. In May 2017, at a meeting for the Los Angeles Police Commission, Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department Charlie Beck explained that northwestern and eastern cities are suffering from heroin and additional opioid problems but added that meth poses a greater threat to southern cities. As Beck explains, meth is not only a cheap drug but also a long-lasting substance, one that can potentially destroy the lives of mentally-ill people. Meanwhile, although Police Commission President Matthew Johnson explained that meth is not a huge issue in Los Angeles, he did confirm that a recent spike in this drug is a cause for concern.
