A CLOSER LOOK AT THE LOS ANGELES METH CRISIS
- February 25, 2019
Often, whenever we think about crystal meth and laboratories where it is manufactured, we will typically picture a bald man dressed in a yellow hazmat suit toting chemicals around a trailer. Although Walter White might have seared the image of meth cooks into the heads of mainstream media for years now, keep in mind that crystal meth does not necessarily pose as great a threat to the U.S. in total; at least, not like it once did. Nevertheless, that has not stopped law enforcement officials in Los Angeles from staying on high alert, as an influx of crystal meth has been reported in the city in recent years. Let’s take a closer look at the reality of the Los Angeles “meth crisis.”

So, where are all the new stashes of crystal meth coming from? According to a 2017 statement released by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Sinaloa Cartel may be one of the biggest culprits to blame for this recent influx. Following a route that starts in Southern California, various cartels have been responsible for shipping dangerously large quantities of this deadly drug across U.S. borders. As we focus more on the dangers of the opioid crisis, the authorities in Southern California consider meth to be a more severe issue in the Golden State.
Cheap, Long-Lasting Poison
In May 2017, at a meeting for the Los Angeles Police Commission, Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department Charlie Beck explained that northwestern and eastern cities are suffering from heroin and additional opioid problems but added that meth poses a greater threat to southern cities. As Beck explains, meth is not only a cheap drug but also a long-lasting substance, one that can potentially destroy the lives of mentally-ill people. Meanwhile, although Police Commission President Matthew Johnson explained that meth is not a huge issue in Los Angeles, he did confirm that a recent spike in this drug is a cause for concern.
