If you are relatively new to the emerging marijuana market in our country, you might be confused with some products that (in all honesty) could slip under the radar of people who aren’t affiliated with the cannabis community. While you might know all there is to understand about joints, buds, edibles, and dabbing, you might not be familiar with something called “shatter.” So, what is this unique product and why do aficionados appreciate it? Let’s just say that avid marijuana users have a strong appreciation for this tasty, potent marijuana concentrate which can quickly induce a euphoric high. So what is this extract and why is it so special to these people? Let’s take a closer look at the byproduct simply called “shatter.”

Crystal Hash Oil

Falling under the category of butane hash oil (BHO), shatter (simply put) is a concentrate extracted from the marijuana plant. Like all types of BHO, this version is made using a solvent called butane, which latches on to psychoactive resin in the cannabis plant during the heating process. Ultimately, the end result is an extremely potent concentrate that contains 40 to 70% of THC (the psychoactive element of the cannabis plant). So, you can imagine why some long-term users are so eager to get their hands on this substance.

Why is it called “shatter,” though? High-quality versions of this concentrate resemble dark golden glass and are always (without exceptions) translucent, making shatter a particularly unique addition to the BHO category. Overall, shatter has a shelf-life of several months.

Shatter or Oil?

Due to its relatively hard texture, shatter is a preferred product for dabbing instead of marijuana oil. Likewise, shatter typically has a stronger and more decadent flavor than oils, which lose terpenes (fragrant oils) due to the influence of CO2 during the extraction process. With shatter, however, butane extraction allows marijuana biomolecules to stay in the final product. Likewise, the major difference between the two products is the simple fact that shatter is agitated before it is prepared, and oil is not.
