If you have ever worked for a multi-million-dollar corporation, corporate division, small business, or private industry (or perhaps another small establishment), then you are probably familiar with the run-of-the-mill and sometimes (from your perspective) irritating drug test. Obviously, as an employer, you do not want to allow your company to be run by people who are high or drunk, so you must take extra measures to make sure your workers and your reputation are safe. However, in a bit of an unnerving twist, positive drug tests seem to be on the rise. Why is this the case and which drugs are showing up the most? Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.
Marijuana Strikes Again
According to a study conducted by Quest Diagnostics, these positive drug tests have been rapidly increasing between 2015 and 2017. Ironically, though, the most common substance that has appeared on these positive readings is none other than marijuana, a plant that has been fully legalized in 10 states and is used as a medication for debilitating illnesses. According to Quest’s report, this drug was found 33% more times in 2017 than it had been in 2015.
Driving and Construction Got Dangerous
So, what could make this situation even more unnerving? Based on the readout, transportation and warehousing industries experienced the biggest boom in positive tests. Add to that the fact that people who work at these companies operate heavy machinery, and you can see why the recent boom has reached life-threatening heights. Rob Wilson (president of Employco USA) explained how operating this equipment is even more dangerous when the operators are high on pot (obviously). Even though employers face charges of discrimination if they fire someone for the possession of a marijuana card, these supervisors still have the right to fire someone who has used pot on the job.
Seeking Treatment for Drug Abuse or Addiction
As much as we do not like to admit it, drug abuse and addiction are not going anywhere anytime soon, but the good news is that you can easily find a way to overcome these illnesses. For many people, though, the emotional and financial burdens of wellness and self-improvement can cause more harm than good, unless you know exactly where to look to find the help you deserve. Just remember, these substances (even the beneficial ones) can negatively impact drug tests (like the ones we discussed) at your workplace, so tread with caution if you are required to use prescription meds.
