Although we have an incredible coastline of sandy beaches, temperate forests, and amazing wildlife, many tourists will tell you that South America provides an experience like no other. What many of these men and women will agree on, though, is the horde of alcoholic drinks that accompany these vacations. After all, margaritas, piƱa coladas, and tequila (three beverages of Spanish origins) seem to gain more favor in the tropics. As it turns out, though, one country in South America seems to have a penchant for alcohol that tops the love from its neighbors. Let’s take a closer look at Argentina’s alcohol culture in more detail.

Women and Children First

Based on a report from the Argentinian Secretariat of Integral Policies on Drugs, this country consumes more booze per capita than its neighbors, but, strangely, the largest increases for alcohol problems have occurred among two unlikely groups: women and juveniles. As of 2010, Argentinian women are consuming 13.5% more booze, while juveniles are drinking 18.4% more than before. Still, keep in mind that this number marks a steady decline from the overwhelming reports from 1991.

Alcohol Is a Uniquely Dangerous Drug

Dr. Carlos DamĆn, head of toxicology at FernĆ”ndez Hospital, emphasizes the importance of this study to residents of Argentina. As he explains, alcohol is a new kind of animal among other drugs he has viewed in the past. In fact, in Dr. DamĆn’s hospital, the staff treats roughly 2,000 cases revolving around alcohol consumption on a yearly basis, with 50-51% stemming from problem drinking.

In response to Argentina’s alcohol culture, the government has attempted to raise the beer tax from 8% to 17%, as well as implement a 10% tax on wine. However, intervention from the President and his staff have impeded further efforts (at least, for now).

Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism

Alcohol withdrawal can easily be one of the most frightening aspects of healing. During the course of the recovery process, you will suffer from minor to severe symptoms that may include night sweats, hallucinations, fevers, anxiety, and sadness, but always remember that you can find the strength to overcome these problems. However, you must always seek medical attention when you have decided to cut ties with alcohol, as the withdrawal process can be notoriously dangerous. Never attempt to do this without the supervision of a trained specialist.

If you are suffering from a severe case of alcoholism or alcohol abuse, or have a friend or loved one who is coping with this illness, get in touch with Asana Recovery today. Our professional team of counselors and healthcare experts will help you endure the painful process of alcohol withdrawal and detox and guide you along the rocky road of rehabilitation. Soon enough, you will experience a faster and much more efficient recovery.

If you want to find out more about our residential treatment or supervised detoxification/withdrawal programs or enroll in one of these programs today, we are ready and waiting to speak with you at your leisure and your disclosure.
