As we continue to bump up the prices of cigarettes on our turf in America, it turns out our friends across the Pacific Ocean are taking a more severe approach. In fact, one BBC News report indicates that Australians are viciously fighting to snuff out cigarette use altogether. Ironically, the first country that produced plain packaging for products containing tobacco is now trying to overthrow the pesky little plant and all its chemical additives. Let’s take a closer look and see if the Aussie power play could be an ideal strategy for other countries.
Smokers Are the Minority
Nowadays, if you travel to the Land Down Under, you will notice that smokers belong to a tiny majority, pushed back into the closet. Mark Driver, Parks and Recreation Planner for Sydney, explains that this situation is a far cry from the old one, when smokers used to cluster on footpaths and create smoking hotspots, literal clam bakes of cigarette smog. Thanks to new laws, smokers cannot light up cigarettes within 33 feet (10 meters) of playgrounds or 13 feet (4 meters) of a public building.
Although these rules are more prominent in New South Wales, other states are quickly following suit.
Pay Up, Mate!
So what is the punishment for breaking smoking laws in Australia? Let’s just say lighting up cigarettes inside these parameters (or inside buildings) will quickly drain an Aussie’s piggy bank. In some places, smokers will be fined $2,000 AUD ($1,403.63 USD), but their funds will disappear even if they don’t break the rules. Australians who smoke can blow a ton of cash on cigarette packs, which cost $40 AUD each.
Even more interesting, Australia has banned all advertising and branding of tobacco products, and cigarette boxes are not decorative, only containing huge warnings about cancer or other health problems and extremely graphic pictures of these afflictions.
Perhaps we in the States could learn much from Australia’s policies.
Seeking Treatment for Cigarette Use
Remember that addiction can be triggered by one shot of alcohol or a single puff of a cigarette, but the true danger of this sickness is that you cannot fully determine how much you have to consume before your mind forms an attachment. Social smoking is just as dangerous as chronic smoking, on many levels, but you do not have to smoke to have a good time. Remember, drugs cannot determine if you have fun and do not have control over your life.
