Teen drug use is incredibly prevalent. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) found that around 75% of high school students have used addictive substances. As early drug use is a risk factor in developing a substance addiction, early prevention is important. This requires an understanding of the factors that lead to drug experimentation at an early age.
A new study tracked the eating patterns and drug usage of 17,000 children, teens, and young adults for a decade in an effort to determine whether there could be a link between the two. The study participants were between the ages of 9 and 16 at the start of the project. The researchers found that increased drug usage was linked to all forms of overeating, whether it be binge eating or more controlled overeating. While these results were in line with what the researchers had expected, they were surprised to find that overeating was not linked to an increase in alcohol use, only drug use.
If you are concerned that your teenage child may be abusing drugs or alcohol, you should consult with a certified addiction specialist about your options as soon as possible.
