Social equality, income range, payment differences – at first, you might think this is the beginning of a political debate, but, as strange as this may sound, these elements play a critical role in an analysis of addiction in our country. Why is that the case? Simply put, lifestyle choices and income do play a huge role in a person’s physical and mental well-being, and that includes exposure to certain dangerous substances. According to recent statistics, socioeconomic status wields tremendous influence over a person’s risk toward alcoholism or drug addiction. Also, keep in mind that some people cannot enter rehabilitation programs due to the simple fact that these treatment centers can sometimes demand incredibly high prices for their detox, withdrawal, and integration practices. However, there are some aspects to our society that have been wrongly paired with issues about substance problems. Let’s take a closer look and break the ice about income and addiction.

The Bad, the Worse, and the Worst

Although a great majority of problems could be related to overblown storytelling, we have to keep in mind that some people do still hold false ideas about the connection between addiction and money in this country. For example, one “stereotype” (so to speak) dictates that people turn to drugs and alcohol to deal with poverty (which is not always true). Second, some people still consider alcohol and drug abuse as immoral activities that are responsible for creating a society of degenerates. Nevertheless, always remember that, while alcohol and drugs can fuel these problems, they are not always the primary cause.

What about the Wealthy?

In retrospect, we must also consider how the middle, lower-wealthy, and wealthy classes also suffer from these false views. Some people may consider these people to be the “idle rich,” men and women with so much money that they don’t know what to do with their lives. However, we must keep in mind that a lot of money can be just as bad as having none when alcohol and drugs are part of the mix. In truth, problems with alcoholism and drug addiction cross planes of income and transcend the rich and the poor. Addiction is everybody’s problem and is not reserved to a single group.

Always remember that alcohol and drugs do not have control over your life. You do. Are you suffering from a substance use disorder or a severe form of addiction?
