At some point during your childhood, you probably watched a few TV shows or animated films which contained at least one reference to drugs or a scene of overindulgence. Count how many times a young boy smoked a cigar in Disney’s Pinocchio. Needless to say, in America’s more PC times, this trend has started to dwindle, unless you happen to be watching a more adult-savvier cartoon on Comedy Central or Adult Swim (Cartoon Network). For today, let’s take a closer look at some famous cartoon characters who tend to overindulge way too much.

Brian Griffin (Family Guy)

If any modern show is guilty of too many adult jokes, you could put the spotlight directly on Seth MacFarlane’s controversial series Family Guy, which might be regarded as the anti-Everybody Loves Raymond in a nutshell. However, fans have long appreciated Brian Griffin, the family’s talking dog, for his sarcastic, droning voice and his bizarrely human antics. Needless to say, the white pooch has always had a drink in his hand and is usually tipsy, whenever he’s not flirting with human women.

Homer Simpson (The Simpsons)

One of the longest-running TV shows of all time, The Simpsons is yet another suburbia sitcom that operates on a more intimate level than other adult shows, given its heartwarming and emotional moments. However, famous TV father Homer Simpson, a protagonist of the show, has been known to overindulge in beer one too many times and tends to lazily slump around the house. While he is not a functioning alcoholic, the yellow-skinned nuclear plant worker definitely shows signs of abuse.

Bender (Futurama)

Matt Groening seems to have a knack for portraying people with alcohol use disorder to a tee, even incorporating robots into the cast of victims. Perhaps one of the best examples of a drunken cartoon character is Bender, the robot sidekick from Futurama, whose very name reflects one of the most severe cases of alcohol abuse a person can endure. He’s a sapient robot who is literally fueled on alcohol. While he doesn’t suffer like real humans, Bender’s case still serves as an example of how alcohol can and does drive a person insane.
