Substance addiction is a problem that cannot be solved by incarceration. Indeed, according to the Center for Prisoner Health and Human Rights, almost half of the United States prison population has a diagnosable substance use disorder. CLIFF, which stands for Clean Living is Freedom Forever, is a prison-based substance abuse recovery program that provides intensive treatment specifically for incarcerated persons struggling with a methadone addiction.
The CLIFF program started in 2005 at the all-male Miami Correctional Facility in Indiana and the results prove that the program is quite effective. Inmates enrolled in the CLIFF program are separated from the general population to participate in 15 hours a day of therapeutic activities. The program provides psychotherapy, substance abuse education, and prepares inmates to maintain their sobriety once they re-enter society. While participation in the program is optional, successful completion of the program may reduce an inmate’s prison sentence.
Regardless of where you are in life, it is important to get help for your substance abuse problems at the earliest opportunity. Substance addiction is a progressive disease and it will only get worse the longer it is left untreated.
