As the great marijuana debate continues to rage across our country and more states start to legalize the drug, one question remains in the minds of parents: how do I properly educate my children about the little green plant? After all, the familiar leaf is riddling shop windows in stores across Washington, California, Vermont, and other states. What is a parent to do? According to one group of eager people, they have provided the solution for concerned moms and dads across America. Now, a Denver-based media group has developed a game show that is (you guessed it) designed to teach teenagers about the marijuana plant. Presented as upbeat and fun, the show addresses a variety of issues related to the herb, but is it effective? Let’s take a closer look and find out how this idea was born.
“Weeded Out”
Organized like a basic game show, the program is entitled “Weeded Out” and follows a particularly simple layout. Basically, the host asks questions related to marijuana, and teenage contestants attempt to provide the correct answers. In the end, if a contestant gives the wrong answer, they will be (as the title suggests) “weeded out.” After a while, the show “weeds out” enough teens until it focuses on nine finalists.
At this point, the show progresses into a Jeopardy-style format, where the teens stand behind podiums and answer more questions. Based on a report from CBS This Morning, “Weeded Out” is being funded by sales taxes on marijuana and is being aired to teenage audiences throughout Denver, Colorado.
So what does the show hope to achieve? Simply put, “Weeded Out” aims to educate teens about the potential health benefits of the drug, policies for marijuana control, and much more. The only question is will it work?
Educational Portal
Since marijuana was legalized in Colorado, teenage weed use has significantly dropped from 26% to 21% (over the course of several years). Even more interesting, similar trends have been taking place in other states that have officially legalized recreational pot. Nevertheless, despite the noble attempt of “Weeded Out,” the public is still concerned about the questionable content, and, ironically, a large portion of backlash is coming from teens. In an interview with CBS This Morning, one teenager stated that the show was a mixed bag and explained that marijuana obviously has medical benefits, otherwise it would not have been legalized.
