Rehab is the process of staying over at a rehabilitation center for a specified period to participate in group, individual, and family therapy. These rehab centers offer outpatient treatment, where the patient can return to their home after attending sessions, and inpatient treatment, where the patient stays several nights at the rehab center. Patients often stay 28-30 days at rehab centers and some stay 90 days or longer.

Steps of Rehab

  • Intake – interview to determine patient background
  • Detox – administer medications to relieve withdrawal symptoms
  • Daily Routine – individual therapy sessions, group therapy, 12-step recovery meetings, meetings with doctors

Intake involves asking the patient questions about their past drug or alcohol abuse, medical history, family life, and any previous treatments they have gone through. Detox is when the patient is kept from using any drugs or alcohol for a specified period with medical assistance. Medical assistance involves monitoring vitals and giving the patient medications designed to ease withdrawal symptoms. The next step in recovery is a series of different therapies to target various aspects of the human psyche.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) works by identifying the negative thoughts of the patient and modifying those thoughts to alter their behavior. The goal of CBT is to change drug-using behavior by first changing thought behavior. Other therapies include family and individual counseling. Families are provided with information about the drug rehab process and counseling on how to support their loved one who is struggling with drug addiction. Individual counseling involves working with a therapist to go through the patient’s issues of the past, before addiction, and after addiction. This sets a framework for where the patient was before and how far the patient has come since.

Rehabilitation centers prohibit any drugs or alcohol on the premises and will not allow patients to leave without permission from a professional staff member. Patients are expected to participate in drug tests and therapy sessions. Most rehab centers have patients share a room, but some higher-end centers offer single rooms. While some of these restrictions may seem strict, rewards are offered the longer the patient stays sober. Weekend passes and unsupervised trips are some of the rewards provided to patients who cooperate fully.

Inpatient Cost

Most insurance plans cover the cost of inpatient stays at rehab centers, and a fair amount of rehab centers offer a sliding fee scale for co-payments. For individuals without insurance, some rehab centers provide private loans or scholarships. Overall, there a variety of options for payment available.

After Rehab

The journey does not always end after treatment at the rehab center has been completed. Aftercare plans, designed to help the patient after treatment, are often provided to patients by the rehab center and include support groups, recovery meetings, outpatient treatment, counseling, and medication management. These aftercare plans ensure that the patient will not return to their previous lifestyle of drug use and attempt to help the patient merge back into the real world. Research has shown that relapses can be prevented by support groups and hobbies like exercise or painting.
