Have you ever heard of a methadone clinic? Most likely, you will answer “no” or “maybe” after hearing this question, and that is understandable. Unless you work at one of these locations or have suffered from severe forms of drug addiction, the chances are slim that you have ever heard of these facilities (much less walked into one). As the name suggests, methadone clinics are locations where recovering drug addicts can receive potentially lifesaving methadone medication, which serves as a stepping stone toward withdrawal, detox, and recovery. However, with the small amount of complaints and the large quantity of praises, what is there to know about methadone clinics? What is fact and what is fake? Let’s take a closer look and bust some myths behind these facilities.
Free Addiction or Help?
One myth surrounding these facilities is the notion that methadone is as dangerous as heroin and prescription opioids, but this is not the case. Based on entries in the DSM-IV (a guide for diagnosing mental health problems), methadone does not meet the qualifications of an addictive substance and, in a sense, is similar to insulin for diabetics. Also, unlike cases surrounding opioids, people cannot overdose on methadone.
Hook-Line-and-Sinker
Some people may also wonder if victims undergo methadone withdrawal (similar to painkiller withdrawal), and the answer to this inquiry is “yes.” While longer than the detox process for opioids (including heroin), methadone withdrawal does not pose any threat to the drug addicts who are using it.
Sometimes, people may hear that drug addicts should continue to use methadone throughout their lives. While some people may find relief by using this drug, people do not have to continue using it into old age. The decision is entirely up to the addicts. (We will also go ahead and debunk the outrageous myth that clinic physicians will attempt to get addicts hooked on methadone here and now.)
Methadone Clinics Are Filthy
Obviously, this last statement is completely false. Overall, methadone clinics adhere to rigorous U.S. health regulations (by federal and state laws). However, as with any other medical facility, some methadone clinics might not be as polished or spotless as others. Nevertheless, these locations are rarities (unfortunate rarities for unfortunate addicts).
