A variety of reports have confirmed that e-cigarettes are just as toxic as traditional cigarettes, but, as it turns out, these little tools can trigger something more dangerous than asthma. According to a report issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2019, officials have confirmed that some people who smoke e-cigarettes have suffered from seizures, a common result of nicotine toxicity in the bloodstream. However, additional reports have also hinted that this might be a growing concern for healthcare professionals. Let’s take a closer look at what the FDA had to say.

Long-Term Problem

In reality, cases involving cigarettes and seizures are unfortunately common and have been occurring since 1988 (online reports since 2014). Over these years, medical professionals and the FDA have been recording incidences through Poison Control centers in which people, specifically young adults and juveniles, suffered from seizures after consuming too much nicotine.

Sadly, the FDA has been taking note of a rise in these cases. In 2018, officials confirmed that seizure reports have been rising in the span of 30+ years. From 2010 to 2018, the FDA and poison control centers received 35 incidences involving nicotine toxicity and seizures, particularly with e-cigarettes.

No Single Trigger as of Yet

At this time, the FDA has not identified a singular catalyst that may be triggering these seizures in e-cigarette users, but officials are working hard to uncover the deadly formula. Ultimately, a variety of aspects from nicotine content and formulas could contribute to these deadly incidences, and the FDA has urged the public to report any incidences through the Safety Reporting Portal (SRP). In the meantime, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is awaiting further documentation on these dangerous cases.

Seeking Treatment for Cigarette Use

Remember that addiction can be triggered by one shot of alcohol or a single puff of a cigarette, but the true danger of this sickness is that you cannot fully determine how much you have to consume before your mind forms an attachment. Social smoking is just as dangerous as chronic smoking, on many levels, but you do not have to smoke to have a good time. Remember: drugs cannot determine if you have fun and do not have control over your life.

If you are suffering from a severe case of drug abuse or addiction, or have a friend or loved one who is coping with this illness, get in touch with Asana Recovery today. Our professional team of counselors and healthcare experts will help you endure the painful process of alcohol withdrawal and detox and guide you along the rocky road of rehabilitation. Soon enough, you will experience a faster and much more efficient recovery.

If you want to find out more about our residential treatment or supervised detoxification/withdrawal programs or enroll in one of these programs today, we are ready and waiting to speak with you at your leisure and your disclosure. Call Asana now at (949) 438-4504 to learn how you can overcome your mental illness and take an extra step toward becoming a healthier person.
