Sometimes, we all need a little bit of help to get through the day, but imagine the kind of support drug addicts and alcoholics require to make it through a single hour. In one moment, life looks promising, until another score of withdrawal symptoms sets in. Later, these men and women may relapse several times before reaching their goals, resulting in a cycle of expensive, lengthy programs. So, how are people supposed to cover the huge chunk of debt that is weighing down on their shoulders? According to a recent report, the U.S. government has supplied a federal program to help addicts cover the debt for their treatment programs.

An Initiative for Addicts

FEDERAL PROGRAM FOR ADDICTION DEBT COVERAGEIn December 2018, the National Health Service Corps (part of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration) initiated the Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program. As part of this new initiative, members will receive $75,000 in student loans as part of a deal for a 3-year work period at a program-approved location (including outpatient programs, mobile units, and other federally approved facilities).

What Is the Purpose?

Not surprisingly, officials developed this Repayment Program as a countermeasure against the American Opioid Crisis. Working in alignment with the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program, this new project not only provides debt relief but also focuses on helping individuals who suffer from drug abuse and addiction. According to Israil Ali (director of the HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce), though, the main difference between the NHSC’s repayment program and the new program is that this current initiative provides an additional year and an extra $25,000, as well as a list of pharmacists.
