Several decades ago, Americans pioneered for the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes, but they probably would never have expected their victory to turn out like this. Over the past ten years, the little green plant has ascended from notorious narcotic to alternative medicine in the blink of an eye, with 33 states officially legalizing the drug for medical use (with an additional 8 allowing the recreational use of pot, as well). In the wake of Massachusetts’ explosive success with its first dispensary, you can imagine that the State of Iowa’s cannabis community’s excitement when they heard the first medical marijuana stores would be opening in their state. Based on recent reports, Iowa will be prepping for these grand openings on Saturday. Let’s take a closer look and find out more.
You’re Not Serving What?
When the stores open on Saturday, patients (officially certified by the state) will have the ability to purchase medical marijuana, which (according to a state official) will completely transform the landscape for how the public perceives the herb. This weekend, five dispensaries will be opened in Council Bluffs, Davenport, Sioux City, Windsor Heights, and Waterloo. At this time, the group MedPharm will be responsible for the manufacturing of all the stores’ products (capsules and topicals).
According to Sarah Reisetter (deputy director of the Iowa Department of Public Health), the stores will not be selling items like joints and edibles, which could be generally confusing to the public. After all, when they think of a marijuana store, joints and blunts (as well as other smoking products) might initially come to mind.
Not Too Much THC
Overall, the 2017 Medical Cannabidiol Act permits the consumption of cannabidiol that does not contain any more than 3% of THC, the primary component in marijuana that induces a “high.” Under this law, lawmakers only permit two in-state cannabis growers and processors, which can ultimately send their products to the five stores.
Ultimately, doctors based in Iowa can only certify patients that meet the qualifications for one of the following conditions:
- HIV/AIDS
- Lou Gehrig’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Crohn’s disease
