When we consider the booze kings of our country, Wisconsin definitely tops the list in terms of consumption of alcohol, particularly beer. In fact, the Badger State has the highest number of drunk drivers, binge drinkers, and problem drinkers among all the other states in our country. Many people have been led to think that this alcohol love stems from German ancestry, as 43% of people living in this state claim to be descended from German immigrants. However, some people are claiming this is a myth and that the overall availability of booze is causing this problem. Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.

German Ancestry in the Mix

Julia Sherman, coordinator for the Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project, explains that blaming German ancestors for alcohol problems is a little too far-fetched. As she explains, the generational gap is too extreme, and much of German culture has disappeared from the state. In fact, Sherman also points out how several moments in Wisconsin history suggest anti-booze promotions. In 1838, the state created a temperance association before any German breweries set up shop.

The A’s Have It

So if German heritage has nothing to do with it, why do Wisconsin residents love alcohol so much? Sherman points out that, besides some cultural factors, other elements are put into play here:

  • Alcohol is available nearly everywhere in the state. In fact, Wisconsin has more selling points for booze than any other nearby state.
  • Wisconsin alcohol is affordable, some of the cheapest in the entire country.
  • Wisconsin is home to a mass of alcohol advertising on places like the public transit.
  • On average, residents of the Badger State have accepted alcohol as a norm.
