Holistic medicine is an approach that focuses on addressing the individual as a whole, with therapies centered around the connection between the mind, body, and spirit. Followers of this practice consider physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, spiritual, and lifestyle elements. Holistic rehabilitation facilities use the principles of holistic medicine to treat drug and alcohol addiction. Their philosophy is that all three areas of health are connected, so a disease that affects one will also affect the other two.

Some areas of therapy might be omitted or done differently in rehab facilities with a holistic focus. For example, detox at a holistic rehab may not include medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, focusing rather on other types of wellness. For those who are concerned about the risks of becoming addicted to medicines sometimes given as part of treatment (for example, tranquilizers used to calm anxiety), this may be a better option.

Since addiction is seen as a disease that attacks the body, holistic rehab centers will attempt to treat physical weaknesses first. This can include any number of activities such as biking, hiking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, or swimming. Because drug and alcohol use can cause nutritional deficiencies, meals will be healthy, sometimes all-natural and organic, and tailored to reverse these deficiencies. Massage or acupuncture may also be used to deal with pain or stress.

Once the body begins to heal, the focus shifts to the mind. Many holistic rehab centers offer alternative therapies, like art, music, and animal-assisted. They can also have sessions for yoga, tai chi, or prayer to restore the spirit. Often, these facilities are located in scenic places, where there are plenty of options for outdoor recreation.

If you are considering a holistic rehab center, be sure to research and find one that’s right for you. Find out what treatments are offered – are they inpatient or outpatient, drug-assisted or not? Do they offer any therapy for underlying mental conditions? Is there any sort of follow-up or transition programs? Is the facility accredited and the staff properly licensed? The location can be important, as well. A facility might claim to have plenty of opportunities to be in nature, but double check those claims before you commit to a long stay. Cost is another factor in this decision. Because of the prime locations and the many amenities offered, holistic centers might be more expensive than more traditional facilities.

If you or a loved one need help to quit drugs or alcohol, consider Asana Recovery. We offer medical detox, along with both residential and outpatient programs, and you’ll be supervised by a highly trained staff of medical professionals, counselors, and therapists. The onsite chef creates a nutritious and complete meal plan in consultation with a nutritionist, for three balanced meals a day. Our location in Southern California means plenty of opportunities for activities in the sunshine, and we have daily group activities, exercise, and even barbecues.  Call us any time at (949) 438-4504 to find out if Asana Recovery sounds right for you.
