If you have ever known a drug addict or have formerly suffered from drug addiction, you will understand how dangerous substances can eventually create a noxious “mental fog” that clouds judgement. In the case of cocaine users, though, long-term drug use can lead to memory problems that are so severe, victims will no longer be able to recall minor details in their lives or make critical decisions. Based on MRI scans, researchers have determined that cocaine can put a damper on regions of the brain connected with decision-making and logic, which may explain why cocaine addicts keep returning to this drug in an animalistic manner. Let’s take a closer look at what scientists determined in the recent study regarding cocaine addiction and decision-making.

Destruction of the Dopamine Network

Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), confirms how addictive drugs, like cocaine, can destroy the brain’s dopamine network, but, interestingly, a large collection of dopamine receptors also happens to be connected to our ability to make decisions. As part of the recent study, scientists assessed 15 cocaine users and 15 healthy subjects who had never touched this stimulant. While administering memory tests to the participants, the researchers conducted MRI scans on the patients’ brains.

Loss of Higher Functions

Ultimately, the team confirmed that the cocaine users provided less accurate answers than members of the control group. Why is this the case? Overall, working memory requires a boost in two regions of our brains: the prefrontal cortex, and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Dr. Hugh Garavan, of Trinity College, explains how the ACC’s activity drops significantly in the brains of cocaine abusers and addicts. In essence, men and women who are attached to this drug lose the capacity to make logical decisions.

Seeking Treatment for Cocaine Addiction

Over the course of many decades, cocaine has risen from the ranks of an over-the-counter stimulant to one of the most feared and destructive substances on the planet. Ultimately, this substance can destroy a person’s brain and body and trigger a severe form of addiction. However, as with any sickness, you can easily find a way to cope with your symptoms. Although addiction has no known cure, you can still stay strong and get clean, if you know where to find the right resources.
