Being in the party scene can be very dangerous; simply exposing yourself to triggers can pull you into relapse. If you are in treatment, it is highly recommended that you avoid direct triggers, which include sounds, smells and images. These are the things that can compromise your efforts and progress on your journey to reaching and maintaining sobriety.

Typically there are two main types of triggers:

-Internal triggers, which normally manifest as negative feelings.

External triggers, (places, people, things, and situations) that tempt you to regress back into your old substance abusive behaviors after a stint of abstinence.

-Early on in addiction recovery, you’ve only just begun developing a sober lifestyle. Therefore, it is best to avoid:

Parties at clubs where you used to abuse drugs or drink alcohol

People that still drink and use drugs

Visiting places during an emotionally vulnerable period where drugs and alcohol are expected to be available

Craving Cycles

Addiction triggers involve high-risk situations. They are seen as stressors that prompt a feeling, thought or action which makes you desire alcohol or drugs over and over again. When a trigger sets in and you get a sudden, strong urge to use again, it’s called a “craving”. Addiction triggers usually lead you to cravings, and cravings stimulate your urge to use.

This is why one of the primary focuses of rehab is to teach you to become more aware of your particular triggers. Once you can identify them, you can learn how to control the following events.

Decline Offers

Learning to say no takes practice! Refusal lines and relapse prevention tips are taught throughout the duration of every addiction treatment program. Here are some suggestions about what you can say in different situations:

-“I’m fine.”

-“No, thank you.”

-“I’m having medical issues at the moment.”

-“I’ll pass.”

The bottom line is that you shouldn’t feel pressured to explain yourself or give in. Even if no one understands you, the fact that you’re striving to recover is a victory within itself.

At Asana Recovery, we understand how difficult recovering from these addictions through our daily work to help those struggling most from this disease.
