You may have an image in mind of a heroin addict, but that isn’t always the case. Here is how to spot a heroin user.
How to Spot a Heroin User
Typically, when you think of a heroin addict, a certain picture pops into your head of what their appearance and behavior should look like. However, not every heroin user lives on the streets with an unhygienic mien, or scabs on their body. In fact, very few of them do; heroin is a drug that allows many of its users to be what is known as a functional addict.
This simply means that they have the ability to hold regular jobs, go to family functions, and attend school. This can make it very hard to figure out whether or not someone is using heroin because it may seem like they are living a normal life.
There are a number of physical and behavioral signs that may be exhibited by heroin users, however. Some of the most common include:
Physical signs:
- Pinprick pupils (this is a very telling symptom; heroin constricts the pupils of a user to a very small size)
- Pale complexion
- Appearing haggard or sudden weight loss (many heroin users don’t stick to their normal diet and lose weight rapidly)
- Unkempt, messy clothes and hair (if the individual once put time into their appearance but now neglects to take care of themselves, this is indicative of a negative change in their life)
- Track marks, small scabs on the legs, arms, or neck where they have used a needle to inject heroin
Behavioral signs:
- Frequently leaving the house for short periods of time
- Being in a noticeably altered state of mind after going out for a walk or visit, seeming more energetic or euphoric after returning
- Having large amounts of spent money being unaccounted for
- Abandoning old friends and hanging out with bad influences
- Using the bathroom frequently, particularly during family outings, coming out seeming a bit different
- Falling asleep during conversations or nodding mid-activity
Keep in mind that some of these symptoms may be a sign of another mental or physical health issue, and that these options should be investigated, also.
