Since it was founded in 1973, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency has striven to defend and enforce all controlled substances laws established by the United States of America. Ultimately, throughout these years, the agency has also striven to uphold the criminal and civil justice systems by apprehending any individuals or groups that are involved in the distribution, manufacture, or growth of illegal substances in the United States. As it continues to battle the opioid crisis and burgeoning issues with black market pot dealings, our DEA has still managed to keep the majority of our streets clean and safe, taking us one step closer to preventing drug abuse and addiction. Let’s take a closer look at some key point in the history of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration.

In the Shadow of Watergate

Following the terrible crisis of the Watergate Scandal, President Gerald R. Ford ordered Roy Ash (Director of the Office of Management and Budget for a second term) to develop a four-man task force to reunify and secure federal drug law enforcement. In January 1973, the president approved this group, which immediately laid three options on the table for Ford: make drug enforcement a duty of the Treasury Department (again), a responsibility of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), or create a new institution under the supervision of the U.S. Justice Department. Ultimately, on March 28, 1973, President Ford state that the U.S. had declared a full-scale war on drug trafficking and sales and handed the duties of drug enforcement to a new division of the government. On that date, the DEA was officially created and permanently institutionalized into our country.

100% Grade-A American

For the United States, the procedures of federal drug law enforcement are rooted in the same American values that are as old and valuable as the principles that founded our beautiful country: independence, strength, and respect. Overall, the accomplishment of developing the DEA reflects a capacity and social obligation to put forward our best effort as a country. During this Thanksgiving, consider that drug enforcement is one of the most American values we can uphold.
