When you consider the details of the 2018 midterm election, you will begin to realize how much of an impact Michigan has left on our country. As of November, it has officially become the 10th state to legalize the little green plant marijuana for recreational use (plus its existing policy of medical-grade pot). However, despite the progress made in this Midwestern State, Michigan is still the seat of controversy for members of the marijuana community, particularly when it comes to their private lives. Recently, the state’s Senate introduced a bill that, if passed, will completely prohibit the cultivation and growth of marijuana in residential homes. So what specific details surround this new incident in the Wolverine State? Let’s take a closer look at these circumstances and find out more.

Keeping a Close Watch on Legal Marijuana

On Thursday, November 29, 2018, Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof clearly stated that he does not want people to grow marijuana in their homes. Overall, he stated that marijuana is on the same page as alcoholic beverages, as both are mind-altering substances, and growing the plants at home would be equivalent to selling booze in an unlicensed bar.

Under the guidelines of Proposal 1 (approved during the midterm election), adults 21 years and older have the legal right to cultivate 12 plants in one series, but these individuals cannot ultimately sell their harvests (gifting is the one exception). While cannabis lounges are permitted, local jurisdictions much give a final approval for these locations. All new marijuana laws will be put into effect on December 6, 2018.

You Don’t Stand a Chance

Nevertheless, Meekhof’s new proposal does not appear to have a successful future in the works. Due to the fact that Proposal 1 was approved by voters, it requires full approval from 75% of both legislative houses. Overall, Republicans outnumber Democrats by 64-47, and it does not appear that the Democrats will be supporting this proposition any time soon. However, some Republicans have voiced their antagonism for this rigorous law.

Senator Rick Jones (Republican) explained that he believes that home growing for personal reasons is not a major problem.
