Simply put, the Opioid Crisis is one of the biggest health scares and public problems recorded in U.S. history, and, despite efforts to fight addiction, this epidemic does not seem to be losing steam anytime soon. Consider the fact that 2 million people suffer from painkiller addiction in America, and you may begin to see why the public and our government is legitimately terrified. However, one famous lawyer may have the key to driving a stake through the heart of the problem. Recently, Mike Moore, a man who is no stranger to historic drug lawsuits, is directly targeting the manufacturers of opioids and is ordering them to stand down before it is too late. So, what are his plans and what could this mean for the future of our country? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

Taking a Shot at Manufacturers

Overall, Mike Moore (a Mississippi Attorney General) is best known for his historic 1998 attack on Big Tobacco, in which the conglomerate paid billions of dollars to repair the damage of smoking-related health problems. About 17 years later, in 2015, he also persuaded BP Oil to make a settlement on billion-dollar lawsuits stemming from the deadly Gulf Oil spill.

Now, in 2018, Moore is taking a shot at the manufacturers of opioids, as well as distributors, in a bold effort to make them pay for the deadly crisis that is wreaking havoc in the United States. Based on evidence collected by the Mississippi lawyer, states like Ohio (one of the states that has been hit the hardest by the epidemic) should be granted billions of dollars by these companies.

A Road of Pain and Death

Ultimately, using the Buckeye State as an example, the numbers do not look promising. In the report with CBS News, Moore explained that Ohio is losing an estimated $4 to $5 billion each year and a staggering 5,000 to 6,000 people simultaneously. Even Attorney General and Governor-Elect of Ohio Mike DeWine has said the Opioid Crisis is killing this state, while Moore reinforces that the companies were fully aware they were hurting people. If he is successful, Moore has projected to provide lifesaving treatment to the 2.5 million people suffering from this epidemic.
