There are two types of treatment options for drug addiction; inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. Inpatient treatment has the patient stay in the treatment center for a certain period of time that can range from a few weeks to a month. Outpatient treatment is when the patient can come and go to the treatment center and can stay in their own house instead of a facility.

One of the benefits of outpatient treatment is that this type of treatment costs less than inpatient treatment since the patient does not have to pay for food and room services. This type of treatment helps people who may have busy schedules at work or school that they cannot leave behind by staying in a treatment facility. Some treatment centers only offer classes on drug education where they talk about addiction and skills for dealing with addiction, while other treatment centers are similar to inpatient services like counseling and receiving medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Outpatient services also offer group counseling to help the drug user understand that they are not alone in their struggles. This helps the drug user not feel so alienated from others because now they can almost see themselves mirrored in others who struggle with drug addiction and see that all of them are human. Within outpatient treatment itself, there are several options to choose from that include partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and outpatient treatment programs.

Partial hospitalization programs are reported as the most therapeutic programs with a specific schedule. In this program, patients are expected to meet with a counselor and participate in group therapy for 5-6 every day for at least 5 days a week. Intensive outpatient programs still have a specific schedule, but with less involvement in therapy. This program is designed to give the patient more free time and works well with students or people who are employed at full-time jobs because patients can come by during the evening sessions and group therapy meetings. Outpatient treatment programs only require 2 hours a week of therapy and group meetings. The patient in this program is also expected to find a therapist or psychologist who has a specialization in drug or alcohol addiction treatment. This program works best for individuals who already have a busy schedule in their lives and offers greater flexibility.

All of these outpatient services usually last about 90 days total for the user to fully recover. Staff at these treatment centers will format the treatment based on your needs and may extend treatment past these 90 days or recommend inpatient care if they feel that you need it.  Please consider trying out an outpatient service if you think you are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction.
