To say that video games are a little controversial might be a bit of an understatement. Parents, focus groups, therapists, and a whole horde of young adults have jumped on the bandwagon of anti-video game movements, mostly because some studies have shown how certain games can, in certain contexts, trigger addiction. When you consider that 155 million Americans spend time in front of gaming screens, though, you can see why people would be a bit concerned. While we are obviously not here to talk about video game addiction, this mental illness still plays a major role in some games, but not in the way you would think. Here’s a closer look at portrayals of intoxication in popular video games.

What Are You Afraid Of?

Although games are the brainchildren of fiction, the fact of the matter is that some drugs in these stories are 100% real and, in some cases, 100% terrifying. According to one report, roughly 61% of games with references to drugs actually feature real-world ones. Although the typical bad boys like marijuana, heroin, and cocaine were obvious leaders in this lineup, hallucinogens also make their scary presence known in some of these games.

Some examples of these psychotropic drugs include Scarecrow’s fear gas from Batman: Arkham City, which interferes with your gameplay ability, and the chem cocktail from Fallout, which boosts stamina and heightens the senses.

Experiencing a Faux High

In some cases, players will experience a faux high through gameplay. In fact, about 40% of video games that reference drugs contain moments when the player’s character is physically and mentally affected by these substances. For example, in the smash-hit Max Payne games, characters consume Valkyr, a dangerous substance that triggers wild hallucinations. Meanwhile, in BioShock, players can gain new abilities and get stronger by consuming ADAM, a steroid and stimulant.

Alcoholism and drug addiction are dangerous sicknesses that should never be taken lightly. However, with the right mixture of perseverance and determination, you can easily get back on track and be happy once more.
