Is vaping marijuana a better alternative to smoking a joint or a blunt? This is a question that has rattled around the heads of pot aficionados and members of the scientific community for a while now. Back in 2017, two surveys did, in fact, confirm that people who vaped marijuana considered it to be a healthier practice than inhaling unfiltered smoke from a blunt or a joint. However, does this necessarily mean that the drug will impact the human body differently? According to scientists, the answer to this question is a big, green “yes.” Based on a recent study, researchers discovered that vaping marijuana tinctures produces a much stronger effect on our bodies than taking a puff off a marijuana cigarette or cigar. In fact, some of the effects from vaping can be quite dangerous. Let’s take a closer look at this unique discovery and find out more.
Less Smoke and Higher Risk
Over the past couple of years, marijuana aficionados have been using vape pens as an alternative to smoking, which is slowly losing popularity. On one hand, you can understand where these people are coming from. After all, vape pens are discreet and do not pose a health risk to non-smokers in the vicinity. Likewise, the byproduct of vape pens does not put the user at a higher risk of lung cancer like bongs, bowls, or joints. However, this does not mean these new tools are without problems.
Based on recent studies, vaping technology might not harm the lungs, but it can definitely have a significant impact on your brain. In fact, JAMA News Network discovered that vaping pot can lead to particularly strong psychoactive side effects and physical problems. In other words, vape pens might appear healthy, but they are much more powerful than a simple joint.
Intense Highs and Cognitive Impairment
Overall, the study focused on 17 adults averaging 27 years old, who have professed to be infrequent smokers of marijuana. During the experiment, these test subjects smoked or vaped quantities of the drug over three alternating sessions lasting eight and a half hours. Later, these subjects completed a questionnaire about the ultimate effects the plant had on their bodies. After the tests, researchers analyzed the THC content in the participants’ bloodstreams.
So what did they find?
Ultimately, the researchers confirmed that vaping produced more intense highs than smoking. Most of the symptoms that increased after vaping included dry mouth, intense anxiety, unpleasant sensations, memory problems, throat irritation, and coughing fits.
